Ed C. Stikvoort (1962, born in the Netherlands) is working at Het Zeeuws Landschap (HZL), a Dutch regional nature conservation organisation. He was studying in Amsterdam at the Hoger Laboratorium Onderwijs and got there a degree in scientific ecological research (Ing). He was working for a period of twenty years at the Rijksinstituut voor Kust en Zee, where he specialised in marine, coastal and estuarine ecology. Subsequently, he was working during a period of eight years at the regional government of Zeeland. He was there in particular responsible for the protection of nature areas, based on the application of Dutch nature laws, such as the realisation of Natura 2000 areas. Since 2014 he works at HZL, mainly as a final editor of a nature magazine. As a volunteer he participates in nature studies. Some recent examples: in 2016 he (co)published about a field study on the diet of Scandinavian rock pipits (Anthus petrosus littoralis) in the Western Scheldt. In 2017 he published, as lead author, a broad study on the historic and actual presence of wild tulips (Tulipa sylvestris) in the province of Zeeland. In the summer of 2018, FLORON published the monumental Flora Zeelandica, with nearly 2000 photos, of which publication Ed was the photo editor. He is particularly passionate about wild flowers, although other organisms and nature in general have also his attention. He does not appreciate a focus on photographic aspects of obvious beauties and rarities, but he is always interested in all species, including the very common and non-photogenic ones. He looks for them during walking trips in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe; these trips are often realised - but not always - around the Mediterranean Sea. |
